Since the first day that we had teeth, people have been dealing with periodontal disease and other gum diseases. In these early days, people obviously didn t have the tools we have today so the treatments were barbaric and very primitive to say the least. Luckily, there have been experts that study the symptoms and causes of these conditions to find out how to treat and prevent them from happening. Despite the improvements in technology, over 90% of Americans still suffer from some form of gum conditions. Periodontal disease seems to be the most common problem out there. It can affect any age, race, and gender. It starts with the foods people eat and the bacteria it leaves behind. When the tissue that supports the teeth become inflamed and infected, this problem is just setting in.

Some people think that tissue is attached to the teeth from a high above. The truth is that there is a crevice between the teeth and the gums that is called the sulcus. This is the area that periodontal disease attacks, right below the gum line. This condition can cause numerous problems that can lead to the loss of several teeth and rotting gums. The amount of damage this causes all depends on how fast the individual gets it looked at and treated.

There are several things that can cause this problem. There are also things that can increase the chances of getting it. People who smoke or chew tobacco, have diabetes, have crooked teeth, take certain kinds of medications, and have defective hardware in the mouth all need to be very cautious about the way they take care of their teeth. The main cause of periodontal disease is poor oral hygiene. People who do not brush their teeth, floss, and use mouthwash multiple times a day are more than likely going to get this disease. When buying a toothbrush, get one with soft bristles instead of hard ones. They do just as good without damaging the tissue and teeth. Make sure to purchase products with fluoride in it to strengthen the teeth. All of this and regular trips to the dentist will go a long way in treating and preventing this problem from happening.

The first stage of this is called gingivitis. This can inflame the gums, cause a red color on the tissue, and can cause bleeding. This stage of periodontal disease is reversible if taken care of right away and done correctly. If left alone, the next phase will be mild periodontitis. This is where receding gum lines start to happen. If still left untreated, then the next stage is moderate periodontitis. At this point, the disease is irreversible but can be prevented from causing further damage. Tooth loss will occur quickly after if the condition is still not looked at. A dentist can give several tips on how to maintain good oral hygiene at home to help control it. They will do a full exam on each patient to determine what the best course of action is to treat the condition.
